چکیده

In this paper, we explore the gravitomagnetic interaction of a black hole (BH) with a misaligned accretion disc to study BH spin precession and alignment jointly with BH mass MBH and spin parameter a evolution, under the assumption that the disc is continually fed, in its outer region, by matter with angular momentum fixed on a given direction Ĵdisc, out. We develop an iterative scheme based on the adiabatic approximation to study the BH-disc coevolution: in this approach, the accretion disc transits through a sequence of quasi-steady warped states (Bardeen-Petterson effect) and interacts with the BH until the spin JBH aligns with Ĵdisc, out. For a BH aligning with a co-rotating disc, the fractional increase in mass is typically less than a few percent, while the spin modulus can increase up to a few tens of percent. The alignment timescale tal ∝ a5/7Ṁ−32/35 is of ∼ 10 − 10 yr for a maximally rotating BH accreting at the Eddington rate. BH-disc alignment from an initially counter-rotating disc tends to be more efficient compared to the specular co-rotating case due to the asymmetry seeded in the Kerr metric: counter-rotating matter carries a larger and opposite angular momentum when crossing the innermost stable orbit, so that the spin modulus decreases faster and so the relative inclination angle.

Alignment and Precession of a Black Hole with a Warped Accretion Disc

We consider the shape of an accretion disc whose outer regions are misaligned with the spin axis of a central black hole and calculate the steady state form of the warped disc in the case where the viscosity and surface densities are power laws in the distance from the central black hole. We discuss the shape of the resulting disc in both the frame of the black hole and that of the outer disc. ...

The Evolution of Black Hole Mass and Spin in Active Galactic Nuclei

Observations show that the central black hole in galaxies has a mass M only ∼ 10 of the stellar bulge mass. Thus whatever process grows the black hole also promotes star formation with far higher efficiency. We interpret this in terms of the generic tendency of AGN accretion discs to become self–gravitating outside some small radius Rsg ∼ 0.01− 0.1 pc from the black hole. We argue that mergers ...

Black-hole Spin and Galactic Morphology

We investigate the conjecture by Sikora, Stawarz & Lasota (2007) that the observed AGN–radioloudness bimodality can be explained by the morphology related bimodality of black-hole spin distribution in the centers of galaxies: central black holes in giant elliptical galaxies may have (on average) much larger spins than black holes in spiral/disc galaxies. We study how accretion from a warped dis...

Alignment Timescale of the Microquasar GRO J 1655 - 40

The microquasar GRO J1655–40 has a black hole with spin angular momentum apparently misaligned to the orbital plane of its companion star. We analytically model the system with a steady state disc warped by Lense-Thirring precession and find the timescale for the alignment of the black hole with the binary orbit. We make detailed stellar evolution models so as to estimate the accretion rate and...

The evolution of misaligned accretion discs and spinning black holes

In this paper we consider the process of alignment of a spinning black hole and a surrounding misaligned accretion disc. We use a simplified set of equations, that describe the evolution of the system in the case where the propagation of warping disturbances in the accretion disc occurs diffusively, a situation likely to be common in the thin discs in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). We also allow...
